@ZHA: Burnham Pavilion
In celebration of the centennial of the creation of the Burnham-Plan the City of Chicago has commissioned a temporary pavilion to be erected in Millennium Park in Chicago. It’s design reflects on Chicago’s long tradition to be on the forefront of building technology. Thomas Gray of “The Gray Circle” shows a film about the history and development of Chicago in the cocoon-like structure. Transparent cuts in the roof open the visitor’s views towards the skyline and reference Burnham and Bennett’s original plans of overlaying the city’s orthogonal street grid with diagonals.
The temporary building is a lightweight structure. Using CNC-fabrication aluminium profiles were bent and connected to frames. These were then covered with tensioned weatherproofed membranes.
